Collection: Crass

Crass were an art collective and punk rock band formed in 1977 who promoted anarchism as a political ideology, a way of life and a resistance movement. Crass popularised the anarcho-punk movement, advocating direct action, animal rights, feminism, anti-fascism, and environmentalism. The band had a DIY approach to their albums, sound collages, leaflets, and films. They spray-painted stencilled graffiti messages on the London Underground and on advertising billboards, coordinated squats, festivals and organised political action, and the anarchist ideas that they promoted have maintained an iconic presence in punk. Due to their free experimentation and use of tape collages, graphics, spoken word releases, poetry and improvisation, they’re also associated with avant-garde movements.

The Crass legacy was further cemented with their Crass Records releases, giving a platform to an impressive array of other bands through 7” and compilations. After punk had already been co-opted, re-packaged and sold back to us, their ‘Bullshit Detector’ anthologies were, and still are, seen by many to capture the purest ethos of punk culture, an event that inspired hundreds to take to their bedrooms and garages and join the DIY revolution. Crass believed in the power of community and that their movement was for everybody.
