Description

‘The Wildfires Tapes’ is a companion release to Polly Paulusma’s sixth studio album ‘Wildfires’, offering a rare and intimate view into the creative process behind one of her most expansive and emotionally ambitious works. Where ‘Wildfires’ presents a carefully shaped rumination on love’s many guises, ‘The Wildfires Tapes’ reveals the songs in their raw and evolving forms, allowing listeners to hear how they came into being. It is released on March 27th via One Little Independent Records and her own imprint, Wild Sound.

Following the release of ‘Wildfires’, ‘The Wildfires Tapes’ opens the door on a lengthy period of writing and reflection. It documents the songs in their earliest incarnations, from demos and first-day voice memos to early live recordings and collaborative sketches that fed into the finished album. The recordings act as a scrapbook of working notes and experiments, preserving moments that would usually remain unheard.

Over a period of eight years, Paulusma wrote or co-wrote more than 100 songs, 22 of which became contenders for ‘Wildfires’. While 19 were ultimately recorded and released on the album, 3 did not make the final cut, and all 22 now appear on ‘The Wildfires Tapes’, many accompanied by their original spoken word prologues. These versions allow listeners to hear how lyrics, keys, moods, and structures shifted over time as the songs moved towards the studio.

Paulusma explains; “I am so grateful to OLI that I can share with you this scrapbook of working notes and song versions. Through The Wildfires Tapes I hope to show you some of the process of how the songs happened, how some of the preparatory work behind the scenes ended up being used in the finished piece, whilst other work was discarded."
